Fishing / Wildlife —
Fishing —The El Nino weather phenomenon has blessed
the Pacific Northwest with an early start to Spring and there is nothing better than the
getting out on the water for those first warm sunny days this time of year! The chum fry
are already moving out into the saltwater and Fly fishing has been good for some bigger sea
run cutthroat trout and the occasional resident coho. Fishing has been "off the hook" for
those tasty sanddabs aka "fillet of sole" and greenling plus the spring ebb tides have made
for some great digging on butter clams, steamers and oysters — makings for some excellent
seafood dinners! Out on the Strait the seabass and big lingcod have already moved into
shallower water on the reefs and we'll be ready for them when the season opens.
Wildlife Watching — Plenty of Harbor Seals
about and many new mothers with young pups out on the islands. Sea Lions, Harbor Porpoises
and the occasional local whale sighting out in the shipping lanes. Migratory birds aplenty
as they begin their migration back up north — Black Brant, Harlequin ducks, Longtails,
Scoter, Mergansers, Goldeneye, Bufflehead, Scaup and more. Flocks of alcids feeding on bait
at MidChannel Bank and the waters off of Protection Island - Murres, Rhino auklets, Pigeon
Guillemots, Murrelets with the Tufted Puffins arriving soon.
