Sea Duck Hunting

Harlequin Sea Ducks and Squaw Sea Ducks

Waterfowl hunting on Washington State's Olympic Peninsula is some of the best in the Pacific Flyway. This area of the Pacific Northwest hosts a wide variety of local and migratory sea ducks, bay ducks, diver ducks and puddle ducks that spend the greater part of Fall and Winter on the inland waters, estuaries and bays of the Northern Puget Sound / Strait of Juan de Fuca region. Due to our temperate climate and a bounty of food sources many of these waterfowl arrive in mass from their breeding grounds in Alaska and Northern Canada and choose not to migrate any further south in the Pacific Flyway. The areas we hunt provide consistent opportunities and the best success rates for a variety of sea ducks including Harlequin duck, Oldsquaw / Long-tailed duck, Barrow's Goldeneye and scoter.

Dave and Bay

Captain David Drewry specializes in traditional diver and sea duck hunting in Washington State, utilizing handmade decoys and "long-line" decoy rigs. The majority of sea duck and diver duck hunting is performed from our safe, stable and comfortable hunt boat. This Yamaha powered custom deep-V welded aluminum boat is well adapted for our regional style of hunting. The strength and design of this heavy duty tender boat allows for safe transportation and hunting in most weather conditions. Be assured that your guide operates as a fully licensed and registered USCG Master Captain and has the time and experience to safely navigate these waters. Due to the unique geography of the Olympic Peninsula we are able to hunt large areas of prime waterfowl habitat within a short driving distance of our headquarters. Many of these hunting areas see little to no additional hunting pressure throughout the season and most are within reasonable distances of our various boat launches, keeping over water travel to a minimum. Hunters enjoy the convenience of lodging near the hunting areas in our comfortable cedar cabins and homestyle Pacific Northwest cooking featuring fresh local seafood and game.

Harlequin Sea Duck Close Up

Both offshore and onshore diver and sea duck hunts target; Harlequin duck, Oldsquaw / Long-tailed ducks, Barrow's Goldeneye, Common Goldeneye, White-winged, surf and black Scoter, Bufflehead, Greater and Lesser Scaup / bluebill, Hooded, Common, and Red-breasted Mergansers. Sea duck hunts are commonly based from the tender boat.

Layout Shooting

In addition, M.L.B. layout boats, a Humboldt style scull boat and driftwood shore blinds are utilized in many of the hunts. The option of these boats and blinds allow us the ultimate flexibility and increased success on the trophy sea ducks. Shooting is often fast and exciting as the sea ducks and divers decoy readily, and can provide for close, yet challenging shots. Diver, bay and sea ducks are among the toughest and fastest of all waterfowl. Northern Pintail / sprig, American and Eurasian Wigeon, Northern Shoveler, Mallard, Green-winged Teal, Gadwall, Bufflehead, Canvasback, Bluebill, Ringneck ducks, Goldeneye, Common and Hooded Mergansers are often encountered on the salt marsh hunts.

Aquapods

When targeting waterfowl in the salt marshes we deploy 10 and 12 foot Aquapod marsh boats as these are an extremely effective way to hunt those areas. Typically, most of the sea ducks and divers arrive around the latter part of October. The onset of late Fall and Winter bring a regular supply of fresh migratory flocks of divers and sea ducks, and these birds continue to stack up in our areas throughout the season. The inland waters of the Pacific Northwest present a milder climate as compared to the more extreme hunting conditions of other typical sea duck hunting areas. Our waterfowl hunting season here is never cut short due to freezing weather. Very rarely do we miss an opportunity to hunt ducks due to severe weather conditions.
